Justin Paton’s book How To Look At A Painting is a beautiful meditation on the importance of art and the exciting ideas and insights that we can have looking at and thinking about art.
Here are some of the quotes that Paton uses to inspire each chapter in his book:
“The minute I sat in front of a canvas I was happy. Because it was a world, and I could do what I liked with it” Alice Neel
“Art evokes the mystery without which the world would not exist”
“The world of art is an enchanting deception” William Hazlitt
“Art is about correspondences – making connections with the world and to each other. It’s about love in that sense” David Hockney
